ADVENT DAY 2 - A LESS THAN PERFECT GENEAOLOGY

ANTICIPATING GOD IN THE CHRISTMAS SEASON (A Daily Advent Devotional)

Over the next few days till Christmas I would like you to take a journey with me in anticipation.  Let's daily look at the events leading up to the birth of Christ with a sense of anticipation of His arrival into this world and into our lives. (Inspired by the Book "The Miraculous Journey" by Marty A. Bullis).

Advent Day 2 - A Less Than Perfect Geneaology

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. (Matthew 1:1 ESV)

To most of us, the reading of any genealogy is boring and tedious.  We are not concerned about our past but only concerned about our present and our future.  To read these genealogies - it is like reading the names on a wall memorializing people who have gone on before us.  It is the same when we read about the genealogies of Christ.  We appreciate what He has done for us but we don't appreciate those who have gone on before Him.  We recognize names like Abraham and Joseph and Mary and others but we don't get a real sense of who they are unless we do some digging.  In so doing, we find out something of interest - these people weren't perfect.  In fact, as we study who they are we see that Jesus came from a genealogy of some very imperfect people who had a very varied background.  We find that there were kings, prostitutes, refugees, adulterers, people who were faithful, crooked, peaceful, jealous, righteous, twisted and humble.  Looking back at Christ's genealogy is a look of hope.  His family was filled with normal people - not exalted individuals but that of troubled people just like you and I.  Yet, this history does not dictate the type of Christ He will be.  His life will be the blending of the divine and the human.  As you anticipate the birth of Jesus - remember that He is a Christ who will be able to redeem our family history.  He is able to take our past and turn it into a future.  He is a God who comes and brings us hope for now and forever.
